Chelsea Fringe Festival 2013

As part of London's Chelsea Fringe Festival, Espacio Gallery will be hosting 'Natural Selection'. An exhibition showcasing 17 artists in a variety of mediums with work relating to aspects of the natural world.

I have the pleasure of participating in this event with a new series of tea stained art entitled, 'Blue Feathers'. Four artworks with a bird/winged narrative running throughout, exploring parallels of nurture, growth and development between ourselves and the natural world. A story that starts with a single blue feather.

Fallen Fledgeling

Fallen Fledgeling - Tea on paper

"To be fully alive, fully human, and completely awake is to be continually thrown out of the nest."
- Pema Chodron -

"Fallen Fledgeling" is the title of this new tea stained piece. A birds nest falls and with it its occupants made up of eggs and baby birds and a rather large blue winged fledgeling. None of them ready to fly and completely inexperienced.

A bit of a challenge as it is a lot larger than any of my previous tea artworks, 76cm x 56cm on 535gm watercolour paper. With this piece I added some additional colour other than just tea, with blue watercolour only on the wings and feathers. I loved the contrast between the warm tones of the tea and thought it a beautiful way of guiding the eyes attention across the composition.

This is the first in a small series but large in scale, playing with certain themes of nature.

Amsterdam Showcase 2012

On Saturday 1st of December I'll be exhibiting in Amsterdam at the international exhibition of contemporary art called Amsterdam Showcase. This amazing exhibit will be held in the historic building, De Oude Kerk.

De Oude Kerk ('The Old Church') is the oldest building in the city and was built around 1300. This church eventually grew in to the impressive medieval monument known today.

The Old Church isn't just used as a place of worship, but also as a concert hall, wedding venue, and exhibition and reception area. It is called Amsterdam's living room. This has always been the case: Fishermen repaired their nets, Sweelinck played the organ, and Rembrandt took out his marriage licence here. Generations of Amsterdam’s citizens, including the naval hero Van Heemskerck, are buried in this European monument.
