An exciting new exhibition of contemporary art opens tonight called FLUX, organised by Gray's Art Gallery and which hopes to be one of many throughout the year across the UK.

I'm very pleased to be among an amazing list of artists who will have work displayed at The Rag Factory just off Brick Lane, London.

On show for the first time will be the new series of work I've been busy working away on titled 'My Monster Amigo'.

“The monsters of our childhood do not fade away, neither are they ever wholly monstrous”
― John le Carré

My new series of work called ‘My Monster Amigo’ plays with the idea of the monsters my generation grew up with, the movies we would watch in secret late at night even when we weren't supposed to or were not old enough to see, as if that would stop us. The way we couldn't sleep for days after but would still be coming back for more.

These experiences however left an imprint in our minds and hearts and we ended up recalling these movie monsters and villains with great fondness. We no longer fear them, they have become old friends, family even like a distant cousin. We remember who we were with, the circumstances that led us to them, the renting or the secret swapping of the VHS tape in school or the local video shop, or just staying up late with our friends or siblings. We remember the good times.

So I decided to show these monsters in another light, as our childhood friends. Hanging out with our misunderstood buddies, sharing moments, kid moments. A juxtapose of innocence and ‘terror’. The narrative belongs to you, some may still find it creepy or disconcerting but the happiness of the child washes that away.

Filled with nostalgia I wanted to keep it simple and went with cardboard and acrylic as a medium, loosely inspired by the look of old Ladybird books I had grown up with and keeping a vintage feel to them. A bit of a departure from my tea based art which most know me for.

“Monsters cannot be announced. One cannot say: 'Here are our monsters,' without immediately turning the monsters into pets.”
― Jacques Derrida

Most children go through a phase where they are fascinated by Monsters and villains.
Why?, Because they’re normal kids, says Beth Block, an Austin, TX-based child therapist. "We all contain both good and evil," she says. "Most kids are seeking a sense of control over powerful emotions, so they identify with extreme versions of bad guys like Darth Vader, who can represent these feelings."

Yes, it can be a concerning when your child is running around menacing a little brother with a sword or threatening to "melt" her sister while wearing a witch's hat -- especially when it seems other children are pretending to be firemen or fairies. But kids need to playact their feelings. And, says Block, violence is usually not the main draw. In fact, a California State University study about the appeal of movie monsters found that superhuman strength and intelligence -- two potentially good qualities -- were the top traits that villain-lovers liked in their bad guys. Fans were interested in the monsters' rejection of the rules, rather than their capacity for violence.

Remember, too, that evil never really triumphs in these books and movies. In the end, good always prevails

“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.”
― Albert Einstein

Somewhere along the line, we have gained more of an appreciation for monsters. Maybe facing our fears or humanizing our horrors; whatever the reason, our culture has started seeing a friendlier brand of monster over the years.

Universal Picture’s black and white monsters were emotionless cretins, a new breed of monsters now have human emotions, fears and insecurities of their own. Those emotions let children relate, and eradicate any fear of these ‘grotesque’ creatures. Once the fear is gone, monsters are just like people, only they may look a little strange.

“It's poor judgment', said Grandpa 'to call anything by a name. We don't know what a hobgoblin or a vampire or a troll is. Could be lots of things. You can't heave them into categories with labels and say they'll act one way or another. That'd be silly. They're people. People who do things. Yes, that's the way to put it. People who *do* things.”
― Ray Bradbury, The October Country

Recently I was given an exciting opportunity to collaborate with Marlow Art Guitars & West London Art Factory on a guitar. Not just any guitar but what would be a beautiful custom hand built rocking instrument made by Steve Marlow who is passionate in what he does.

I decided to go with a David Bowie inspired theme from his 70's alien invader persona Ziggy Stardust. There are a few references to his movie debut as 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' and his iconic album 'Alladin Sane' originally titled 'A Lad Insane' or 'A lad In Vein'.

"There's a Starman waiting in the sky, he'd like to come and meet us but he thinks he'd blow our minds"

I used tea for base tone and texture and a bit of acrylic paint to add spots of additional colour that I hoped would be accentuated when varnished. The end result pimped out with gold hardware really brought everything together on this.

Here's how it all went...
I can finally reveal a mini project I'm working on with computer manufacturer Lenovo and artists Heidi Bjork and Pauli Bates. A three week group project with the theme 'Open Your Eyes' which is now in its third and final week and now my turn to put my creative cap on, this time with a bit of photography.

Week 1 – Heidi Bjork created a painting based on “Open Your Eyes” theme. Link
Week 2 – Pauli Bates created 9 illustrations based on the theme. Link
Week 3 – Carlos M Burgos will shoot 9 photos based on the theme.

Week 4 – We’ll be giving away a Lenovo Touch PC to one of our followers…Link

A new year has now begun and with it new projects and goals. It's been a very busy year for me hence the blog posts have suffered a bit, but we're back and new stuff on the way!

So we say hello to 2014 and I leave you with a short recap of the creative year gone :-)

I'm so excited to be part of the launch exhibition, 'Looking for U', of a new gallery which opens tonight in London... West London. With so much happening in East London already art wise, it's a big change to hear about a new art venture that aims to bring “some of the most cutting-edge and uncompromising contemporary art London has to offer, as well as an exclusive selection of international talent.” to a new part of the capital, Chiswick W4.

"We seek to give voice to artists everywhere. We will be working closely with both undiscovered talent and established artists alike. We believe that art should be inclusive. Art should be celebrated. Art should be undivided."

The Unit London is an independent gallery space housing a collective of artists who put the artists and the art first, ahead of the consumer and the market. It exists as a dynamic creative platform that shifts the focus from ‘reputation’ onto where it should be: the unbridled celebration of art, for U: U the enthusiast, U the artist, U the individual.

This is exactly what these guys are about, they are passionate and sincere about art and it shows, I've seen them work hard preparing for tonights grand opening and genuinely care about the artist and their work. Their hard work and drive is sure to show tonight as they unleash some amazing art works to a public which have only seen snippets of whats planned through an empty retail space window and across social media platforms in the weeks leading up to this, keeping people keen, curious and interested.

As some of you know already, I recently completed a small series of work with a bird/winged narrative running throughout, exploring parallels of nurture, growth and development between ourselves and the natural world. A certain surreal parody runs along these works also.

This series is called Blue Feathers. A story that starts with a single blue feather. These tea pieces are larger in scale than my previous tea pieces; 76cm x 56cm on 535gm watercolour paper.

The Becoming - Our journey begins with the initial formative stages of a life, its potential seen by the growths on its back as to what it is to be or could become. It takes shape within an oval encasing, referencing a womb or maybe even an egg. A blue feather gives us a clue and takes our story forward...

The Becoming

The Two Surrogates - Here I make reference to the nurture a life needs to grow and develop, in this case two blue feathered birds (blue tits) are taking care of this child as their own. Attentive and Caring for it by nourishing it with allsorts. Feeding it with worms (protein), sweets (sugar), a pill (medication) and even iron (vitamins/minerals) in the shape of a paperclip.

Fallen Fledgeling - As this creature grows and develops in the proverbial nest, it still must learn to fly. Here we see inexperience, attempts at making decisions and taking that jump to leave. But not all her siblings as well as herself are ready, and some don't make it. We see her wings have not fully formed yet.

Hi everyone, a quick post about what i've been up to lately creating a new piece for a great nostalgic art exhibition called 'Memorabilia' which opens this weekend. An exhibition of artwork and objects from childhood memory and memorabilia by over 100 artists with 30% to 100% of all sales going to charity in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital to be held as part of the Leytonstone Arts Trail.
This theme has been a joy to work on drawing some of my childhood TV heroes once again, something I would do many years ago like most kids, drawing Spiderman and saturday morning cartoons. I wanted to create a piece that would be very nostalgic showing TV influences and referencing film, a time for many of us growing up in the 1980's of wonder and excitement when we used to come back from school or wake up early morning weekends and tune in to watch Knight rider or Thundercats or even Sesame Street.
My new tea piece is called 'The Wonder Years' and will be shown for the first time at this fabulous show. Plus to make things a bit more fun I've also included the seven dragon balls from the 'Dragon ball' cartoon along with Goku and even Scrooge McDuck's nephews are hiding throughout the piece from 'Duck Tales'... if you can find them within this vintage party. Below is a little preview of 'The Wonder Years'.
I have the pleasure of participating in this event with a new series of tea stained art entitled, 'Blue Feathers'. Four artworks with a bird/winged narrative running throughout, exploring parallels of nurture, growth and development between ourselves and the natural world.
"Fallen Fledgeling" is the title of this new tea stained piece. A birds nest falls and with it its occupants made up of eggs and baby birds and a rather large blue winged fledgeling. None of them ready to fly and completely inexperienced.

A bit of a challenge as it is a lot larger than any of my previous tea artworks, 76cm x 56cm on 535gm watercolour paper. With this piece I added some additional colour other than just tea, with blue watercolour only on the wings and feathers. I loved the contrast between the warm tones of the tea and thought it a beautiful way of guiding the eyes attention across the composition.

This is the first in a small series but large in scale, playing with certain themes of nature.

On Saturday 1st of December I'll be exhibiting in Amsterdam at the international exhibition of contemporary art called Amsterdam Showcase. This amazing exhibit will be held in the historic building, De Oude Kerk.

De Oude Kerk ('The Old Church') is the oldest building in the city and was built around 1300. This church eventually grew in to the impressive medieval monument known today.

The Old Church isn't just used as a place of worship, but also as a
concert hall, wedding venue, and exhibition and reception area. It is
called Amsterdam's living room. This has always been the case: Fishermen
repaired their nets, Sweelinck played the organ, and Rembrandt took out
his marriage licence here. Generations of Amsterdam’s citizens,
including the naval hero Van Heemskerck, are buried in this European
monument.

An epic digital art piece I had the honour of collaborating on with Jonathan Ramirez as part of his series of works titled 'The Mayan Prophecy', has been published in Catapult art magazine issue #15 on pages 102 - 103.

This piece is called Escatologia which is the spanish term for eschatology based on the greek word éskhatos: 'last' and logos: 'study'.

I worked on two pieces with Jonathan and provided a backdrop for his Mayan Warriors. This is an example of some of my digital art which together with Jonathan's digital genius we were able to create this modern vision of Quetzalcoatl the feathered serpent and the awakening of an ancient civilization.
I know, it's been a while but sometimes time is not ones friend which it most certainly hasn't been in my case. However I have been busy further developing my tea stained art and preparing new pieces to be unveiled at the New Artist Fair which returns this September in London's Brick Lane with over 40 artists of all genres, styles and mediums. The Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane will be hosting this exciting event.

I have prepared smaller more affordable works lately measuring just 13cm X 20cm as well as slightly larger works too. These have all been made using Tetley tea bags and Twinings rasberry & strawberry tea. No paint has been used, only the teas staining hues and properties. The only additional materials used are pencil, ballpoint pen or white ink.

'Shura-Yuki-Hime' - (tea, pencil, biro & white ink on card)

My latest tea stained piece brings you the beautiful 1970's Japanese actress, Meiko Kaji from the cult classic movie 'Lady Snowblood' (original Japanese title 修羅雪姫, Shurayukihime). A 1973 Japanese film directed by Toshiya Fujita. It is based on a manga comic called Shurayukihime.

The title of this piece is 'Shira-Yuki-Hime' which is the name of the main protagonist. This has to be one of my favourite movies in my collection, fantastic story of tragedy, great imagery and swordtastic action.

Shurayukihime (修羅雪姫) – meaning “carnage snow princess” – is a pun on
Shirayukihime “white snow princess”, usually referring to Snow White,
and is translated for this classic film as “Princess Snowblood”.

It was also a major inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill,
which borrows plot, characters, visual motifs and settings. In
particular the character O-Ren Ishii is based on Lady Snowblood. The
scene in which The Bride fights O-Ren Ishii uses a snowy landscape that
echoes scenes in Lady Snowblood. The theme song, "Shura No Hana", sung by Meiko Kaji (translated by Tarantino as "The Flower of Carnage") is also used in Kill Bill, Vol. 1.

I must say I really enjoyed myself at The Other Art Fair last Saturday. I made my way to Ambika P3 on Marylebone Road and over to the Fabelist Marketplace at stand 186 where as part of their programme of activities I would be giving a masterclass-workshop.

Luckily I had enough time to go exploring before giving my workshop/demo. I walked through the mazes of white walls each demanding the attention of the eyes with the array of art hanging on them.
Some stood out more than others reaching beyond the retinas and straight to the soul. Artists beside their work and open to interrogation under the spotlight of the public lamp.

The atmosphere was great and not as stuffy as some events can be, relaxed and fun. Lots of bite size arty activities for the public such as the Cass Art Live Art Space and their drawing salons and wall. Jotta.com giving curated tours of the fair and the Fabelist Marketplace giving workshops, meet the artist talks, performances, art and even sensory experiments courtesy of The Edible Art Movement. These and many more.

I enjoyed visiting many of my other friends exhibiting at the fair and entering their mini worlds of art on display in their spaces, Beth Nicholas, Gloria Ceballos, Rosie Emerson, Kate Night, Hormazd Narielwalla, Sam Shendi, and Vikram. Finally meeting other members of the Fabelist collective and how incredibly supportive they all are with each other made me proud to stand alongside them.

Fabelist artists exhibiting at the marketplace were Chantal Powell, Tahnee Lonsdale, EC, Raj Kaur, Pernilla Iggstrom, Zoe Catherine Kendall, Polly Bagnall, Nicola Anthony.

After my workshop I stayed on and with a calmer demeanour walked around again
as once is not enough to take it all in and still I managed to miss
things. The smiles on the faces of my Fabelist brethren and of director
Francesca Goodwin made me not want to leave.

I wanted to share with you these four awesome skulls painted by Swedish artist Larsa Bondén. These four paintings are part of the collaboration between Larsa and artist Jonathan Ramirez who is based in Dallas, Texas.

The result of this collaboration will be unveiled as part of the exhibition 'Mayan Prophecy' which opens on the 18th May at gallery WAAS, Dallas.
The Fabelist collective will be presenting a pop up market place curated
exclusively for The Other Art Fair, London's newest art fair that delivers an
open platform to connect art buyers of all tastes and experience
directly with the most talented emerging artists before they are signed.

It runs from 10th - 13th May at Ambika P3, Marylebone Road, London NW1. Get your tickets here.

Fabelist artists will be showing their work and whilst you view, interact and learn from a series of performances, talks and master-classes from artists such as The Edible Art Movement, Polly Bagnall, Zoe Catherine Kendall, Nicola Anthony, Rosie Emerson, Ash Fitzgerald, Raj Kaur, Carlos M Burgos, Chantal Powell, Pernilla Iggstrom, Silvia Krupinska, Rachelle Allen Sherwood.

As part of this collective, I will be giving a workshop on Saturday 12th May, 2pm - 3.15pm.

I'll be carrying out a drawing exercise in imagination and creativity. Using everyday objects we will be looking at them differently and putting aside their original function and size etc and letting our own imagination combine them to create new mechanical creations bringing them to life.
The bug in the picture above was inspired and made from a watch and its strap and the nib of a ballpoint pen which then grew wings, eyeballs and insect characteristics.

I'll be showing a piece at the A-side B-side Gallery in London on Thursday May 3rd for a show called 'REJECTED'. A great show exploring art and rejection. (Read the press release below)

I'll be exhibiting alongside Darren MacPherson, Tinsel Edwards and Twinkle Troughton with whom I've been privileged to have shown work with before in Los Angeles, Orange County and at Debut contemporary Gallery, London and at The Fabelist's Imprint Exhibition earlier this year.

The piece I'll be showing is a collaboration with digital artist Jonathan Ramirez that I did last year, one of five pieces we worked on. Jonathan will be having his first major solo show in Texas on the 18th May called 'Mayan Prophecy', where we have collaborated on a further two original pieces of artwork including a collaboration with Swedish artist Larsa Bondén which will be shown at WAAS Gallery.

Artists
frequently get rejections from shows and competitions; rejection is part of
what being an artist is all about.

Often
an exhibition will have a curatorial concept and the work just simply doesn’t
fit the theme, in competitions the judges are subjective and essentially select
what they like. Current trends in
the art world might make the work more or less desirable not forgetting the
provenance of the artist themselves...

‘Rejected’
seeks to celebrate rejection, through a united force of artists getting
together to valiantly display their previously rebuffed work. The exhibition aims to dispose the
issue of whether each individual piece is indeed lesser than that of its
contemporaries. Following an open
call, every single proposal to the Rejected exhibition was accepted. Alongside their rejected artwork, each
artist will openly display a list of previous rejections from galleries,
competitions and art schools.
